Today in America it is Thanksgiving. Not being American and living in the UK, this holiday has been a little bit of mystery to me. In the past. it had gone by without event but having a number of American friends together with a personal focus on gratitude meant this year I wanted to know more. When I sat down to think about it I am ashamed to say that I realised my knowledge of great American holiday was cobbled together from The Simpsons, Snoopy, soaps and that scene in The Adam Family, where Wednesday goes amok at camp, if that is even about Thanksgiving I'm not sure . So much worse than an elementary student! Being a librarian, Wikipedia (!) came to my rescue. The nearest we probably come to Thanksgiving in the UK is probably the harvest festival, normally relegated to school assemblies and churches and involving a tin of something at the back of the cupboard . Anyway I digress...
Anyway what appeals to me is the essence of having a day being grateful and expressing gratitude to others and for all the blessings in one's life. Yes the turkey and eating your own body weight sounds great too but to be fair we do enough of that at Christmas.
So tonight in my own little way I am going to celebrating thanksgiving and taking it as an opportunity to do a short meditation and express gratitude for all my blessings. Thank you to you and namaste x
